List of Public Universities in Texas

    • Texas has over 25 public universities, most of them part of larger university systems such as the University of Texas System, the Texas Tech University System and the Texas A&M University System. Several of Texas's public universities have student enrollments over 50,000. Texas's public universities offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in hundreds of different fields.

    Texas A&M University

    • Founded in 1876, Texas A&M University was the first public university in Texas. The university ranked 61st in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities. As of 2009, the school had over 38,000 undergraduates and over 9,000 graduate students. Texas A&M offers over 120 undergraduate degree programs within 10 different colleges, including the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Science, the College of Geosciences, the College of Architecture and more. The university also offers about 250 master's and Ph.D. programs. Texas A&M University is the leader of the Texas A&M University System, which includes eleven different universities in Texas. Texas A&M has branch campuses in Galveston, Texas, and in Qatar.

    The University of Texas at Austin

    • The University of Texas at Austin, founded in 1883, was ranked 47th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities. As of 2009, the university had over 38,000 undergraduates and nearly 13,000 graduate students enrolled. UT Austin offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in 18 different colleges and schools, including the School of Architecture, the College of Fine Arts, the School of Law, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education and more. The University of Texas at Austin is the oldest of the seven universities in the University of Texas System. Other schools in the system include the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Texas at Arlington.

    Texas Tech University

    • Texas Tech University, located in Lubbock, Texas, was founded in 1923. As of 2009, the university had about 24,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students. Texas Tech University offers 150 different undergraduate degrees in 11 colleges, including the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Mass Communication, the College of Education and more. Texas Tech University's Graduate School and School of Law award master's and doctoral degrees to graduate students. Texas Tech University is part of the Texas Tech University System, an organization that also includes Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Angelo State University.
